September 14, 2008
It is Sunday morning, September 14th. I've just returned from an incredibly inspirational Shabbaton in the Poconos sponsored by JTS. In attendance were the deans of both the Rabbinical and Cantorial schools, the Chancellor of JTS (Arnold Eisen), and roughly 20 students from each of these two professional schools. The theme of the weekend was "Kedusha - Holiness". How can we, as professionals who are expected to work on Shabbat and other Holydays, still find ways to instil kedusha into our own personal observance of these days, despite the professional task at-hand.
It was a great way to become better acquainted with others in my school.
I made the argument that part of my own process of attaining kedusha and meaning during services is when I've managed to help and guide you, my Halifax congregation, towards deeper kavanah and kedusha.
I will be back in Halifax in just under two weeks. Between now and then, think about how I can help you reach new levels of holiness and meaning during the High Holiday season. Find ways of articulating these suggestions, and I will do my best to assist you in forging sincere connection to our tradition and our liturgy during the High Holidays.
Once again, see you at services on Friday, Sept 26th, Saturday Sept 27th, and of course, the High Holiday season beginning Monday night, the 29th.
With warm regards,
Ari
