Adult Education
The adult education programs organized by the Shaar Shalom Synagogue reflect the interests of members and/or the strengths of our spiritual leader.
Current Adult Education Opportunities:
The Shaar Shalom has partnered with the Halifax Community to present relevant and educational programs. The Saul Green Lecture Series, in partnership with the Medical Humanities Program at Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine, addresses the intersection of Judaism, medicine and humanitarianism, all three of which Dr. Green was passionate about in his lifetime. It focuses on the complex humanistic and ethical challenges facing modern medicine, within a Jewish context.
The Shaar Shalom St. Mary's University Annual Lectureship focuses on the theme that "in a multicultural society, what are the things that keep us apart and how they can be brought together”. The inaugural public lecture was given by Prof. McKay of the Dalhousie Law School.
Past Adult Education Opportunities:
Over the years, the offerings have been diverse in nature, from musical renditions during Jewish music month, to book reviews for Jewish book month, to Scholar-in-Residence weekends. We have offered Hebrew classes, conversion classes, training in synagogue skills, as well as classes for those wishing to chant a haftorah. One of the Shaar's most memorable events was the Women's Bat Mitzvah class, held for a group women of the synagogue who did not have one when they were growing up. At the conclusion a communal Bat Mitzvah was held.
In 2007, two Environmental programs were held. The first was a stimulating Climate Change Symposium that was part of Tikkun Olam, our obligation to "Repair the World". The second was a Jewish Environmental Symposium focused on environmental themes in Judaism.
